Easy, Inexpensive, Cute Gift Idea
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's called Snowman Soup. You will need small baggies (ie sandwich bags or craft bags or cellophane bags), packets of hot chocolate mix, mini marshmellows, small peppermint stix or candy canes, Hershey's Hugs & Kisses, & cardstock or other heavy-weight paper cut in two sizes.
In each baggie put one pkt of hot chocolate mix, a few marshmellows, a peppermint stick, one each Hug & Kiss, & the following poem on a small piece of the heavy paper. Seal the bag.
"Snowman Soup Recipe
Empty a packet of cocoa into a special mug. Fill with steamy water. Add a kiss & a hug. Mix with a magic stick, then add a few marshmellows. And you'll be one happy fellow."
Cut more paper the width of the baggie & as long as you like. Fold paper in half lengthwise. Using double-sided tape or glue attach the filled baggie to the inside of the folded paper. (Another option is to punch holes thru' the paper & the baggie & seal it with ribbon, pipe cleaners, or yarn.) On the outside of the paper write the following poem & decorate as you wish.
"Snowman Soup
Was told that you've been good this year. Always glad to hear it. With freezing weather drawing near you'll need to warm the spirit. So, here's a little Snowman Soup complete with stirring stick. Add water, stir it slow. It's sure to do the trick."
A friend & I made these last year to use as party favors for our hs holiday shindig. They were a big hit. This year I'm carrying a few around to give to people who look like they could use a little pick-me-up. For instance, the bank teller who confided that she could care less if Christmas came & the sweet gal at karate who always has something nice to say.

One year I had dd put her painted handprint on a square tile (like a 6" tile from a home improvement store, etc...pretty inexpensive) I wrote her name and the date under the handprint, and sealed it with shelac. For my mom I bought a plate rack for display, for other grandma, I added cork feet to the bottom, and it's used as a coaster.
Anything with their handprint is usually a hit in our family, anyway...
-paint picture frames, or decorate with odds and ends, and put a picture of the child in it
-make a christmas ornament with the child's picture
-depending on the age, my dd's make the hotpads with the kids you can get just about anywhere (the weaving loom sets)
-draw a picture and frame it
-sculpey makes great gifts, it's the kind of clay you back, then spray with sealer - they can make anything with it
-one year they made bookmarks and we lamenated them
-cut pieces of fleece and have them cut one inch strips at each end for a super easy scarf (dk's made these for ss teachers also)
refrigerator magnets
glue shells to magnets
glue tiny magazine pictures to the flat side of glass pieces(used in floral vases), then glue on a magnet (my mom loved these)
One year for Christmas I made all the Grandparents aprons. You can get plain aprons at any craft store. Then I drew a reindeer face (with a red nose of course!), and the kids' handprints were the antlers. I think I wrote something cheesy like "My Deer Grandma" on it...
This link shows the idea: Craft Idea (http://www.funroom.com/store/handprintreindeer.mgi) This is kind of the idea, except I traced the reindeer head and handprints with pencil, then went over it with fabric paints.
This year my daughters (10 & 8 y/o) are making beaded keychains for their aunts and grandmas.
tote bags for Grandma:
give them fabric markers to draw and write anything, or scan a picture to transfer paper and iron on. I don't have a scanner but I heard it's easy to do. Personally we did fabric markers and they had a blast! Oh - and puffy paints too.
hand print cold cup coaster EASY AND CHEAP
Cover your child's hand in paint, make a print on construction paper of any color, cut around it and laminate it. Very simple and cute. Before laminating, have the child write something on the other side with their name and date.

BOUQUET GARNI BAGS -- JackJumpUp
Put together some small bouquet garni bags to give to a favorite cook, and why
not include a few recipes from the board! You can use traditional herbs such as
dried thyme, parsley and a bay leaf, place in a square of cheesecloth; tie the
cheesecloth with kitchen string or heavy duty thread for easy removal from the
stock pot.
GINGERBREAD MIX -- Daisy7957
From my sister-in-law, Carolyn Taylor, Broken Arrow, Okla.
I would think all the cooks here have already done this...but maybe someone out
there will find it to be a new idea.
8 cups Flour
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup baking powder
1 Tbsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ginger
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
2 cups shortening
Sift dry ingredients and cut shortening into it with a pastry blender. Measure
3 cups into 4 jars. Decorate jars with raffia or ribbon. Attach gingerbread
cutter and the following recipe:
Gingerbread Boys
3 cups gingerbread mix
1/3 cup molasses
1/4 cup flour
1 slightly beaten egg
Combine gingerbread mix, molasses, egg and flour. Blend well. Roll to 1/4"
thickness on lightly floured surface. Cut into gingerbread shapes. Place on
greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool. Can be
decorated with cinnamon candies. Recipe to be used within 3 months.
JAR BREADS -- repost from AuntSally (Sally)
Carrot-Raisin Jar Bread
2 2/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup shortening
4 eggs
2/3 cup water
2 cups shredded carrots
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2/3 to 1 cup raisins
You'll need 6 wide-mouth pint-size canning jars, metal rings and lids. Don't
use any other jars. Sterilize jars, lids and rings according to manufacturer's
directions. Grease inside, but not the rim of jars. Cream sugar and shortening,
beat in eggs and water, add carrots. Sift together flour, cloves, cinnamon,
baking powder, baking soda and salt; add to batter. Add raisins and mix. Pour
one cup of batter into prepared jars. Do not use more than one cup or batter
will overflow and jar will not seal. Place jars evenly spaced on a cookie
sheet. Place in a pre-heated 325-degree oven for 45 minutes. Remove jars from
oven one at a time keeping remaining jars in oven. Working quickly, wipe rim,
place lid and ring on jar and secure. Jars will seal quickly. Repeat with
remaining jars. When ready to serve, bread will slide out. A properly sealed
quick bread will stay fresh for one year.
Chocolate Jar Cakes (Oh my, these are sooooo good!)
8 pint-sized wide mouth canning jars
1 stick plus 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter
3 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 Tbsp. vanilla
2 cups applesauce, unsweetened
3 cups flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
Pre-wash canning jars (be sure to use the kind that have no shoulders) in hot, soapy water. Rinse well, dry and let them come to room temperature. Grease insides of jar well. Beat together butter and half of sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and remaining sugar, vanilla and applesauce. Sift dry ingredients together and add to the applesauce mixture a little at a time: beat well after each addition. Pour one cup of batter into each jar and carefully remove any batter from the rims. Place jars in a preheated 325-degree oven and bake for 40 minutes. While cakes are baking, bring a saucepan of water to a boil andcarefully add jar lids. Remove pan from heat and keep lids hot until ready to use. When the cakes have finished baking, remove jars from oven. Make sure jar rims are clean. (If they're not, jars will not seal correctly) Place lids on jars, and screw rings on tightly. Jars will seal as they cool. Cakes will slide right out when ready to serve. Unsealed jars should be stored in the refrigerator and eaten within 2 weeks. Sealed jars may be stored with other canned food or placed in a freezer. The cake is safe to eat as long as the jar
remains vacuum-sealed and free from mold. To enjoy the best flavor, try to eat all canned cakes within 6 months.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease the insides of 8 straight-sided wide-mouth pint canning jars. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Set aside. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and beat in well. Add flour alternately with water and mix until smooth. Fold in apples, raisins and nuts. Fill jars 1/2 full of batter, being careful to keep the rims clean. Wipe off any batter that gets on the rims. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, sterilize the lids and rings in boiling water. As soon as cake is done, remove from oven one at a time, wipe rims of jars and put on lid and ring. Jars will seal as cakes cool. Place the jars on the counter and listen for them to "ping" as they seal. If you miss the "ping", wait until they are completely cool and press on the top of the lid. If it doesn't move at all, it's sealed. Unsealed jars should be eaten or kept in refrigerator for up to a week. Sealed jars can be stored with other canned food for up to a year.

Boil 10 minutes. Remove with a holder and allow jars to air-dry. Save water for processing apples. Combine sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and water in a large saucepan. Place over high heat and cook until thick and bubbly, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice. Tightly pack apples into sterilized jars. Slowly pour syrup over apples, covering them completely. Gently tap jars on countertop to allow air bubbles to rise. Screw lids on jars. Carefully lower jars into pot using a holder. Leave a 2 inch space between jars. Add more boiling water if necessary, until tops of jars are covered by 2 inches of water. Bring water to a full boil, then cover and process for 30 minutes. Remove jars from pot and place on cloth-covered or wood surface, several inches apart, until cool. Once cool, press top of each lid with finger, ensuring that seal is tight (lid doesn't move up or down at all). Sealed jars can be stored for up to a year.

Bagel Mixes
You can not only make your own bagels, but can also make mixes to keep on hand to make this already ‘‘easier than it looks' job, more convenient. You can make the dough for your bagels in your bread maker, using the dough cycle. Once your dough is ready, follow the directions below to make your own moist, chewy bagels!
1- Set aside two 1/4 inch balls of dough. You will use these later to determine if it is time to boil your bagels. If dough pops to the top of the boiling water right away, you are ready.
2-Place the dough on a floured surface and divide into 8 (5) equal portions. Form balls, and gently press your thumb through the middle of each ball and slowly stretch dough into a bagel shape. Leave bagels to rise on same floured surface, lightly covered with a towel.
3- While the bagels are rising, bring 3 quarts of water to a rolling boil. Add 1 Tbsp. sugar to boiling water and stir to dissolve sugar. Drop first dough ball from step one, into boiling water, using a slotted spoon. When dough balls pass this test, you are ready to boil your bagels by dropping them carefully into the boiling water, 2 or 3 at a time. Boil on each side for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from water, and cool on wire cooling rack for 1 minute.
4- Brush each bagel with an egg wash (1 egg + 1 Tbsp. water) and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired. (Non-stick cooking spray may be substituted for egg wash).
5- Bake at 400 degrees F.on baking sheet which has been sprinkled with corn meal (can used greased baking sheet), for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. *You can make Bagel Chips by slicing left-over bagels into thin slices (horizontally), and brushing them with melted butter or margarine. Lay, buttered side up, on an ungreased baking sheet, and bake at 325 degrees F. for 12 - 15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. **You can make Bagel Sticks by cutting bagel rounds before they rise, and laying them into straight lines. Let rise, boil, and then spray with non-stick cooking spray, roll in sesame or poppy seeds if desired. Bake just as you would for round bagels.

FIL I seem to gravitate towards hunting stuff or gift cards for resturants. Not very creative but in 10 1/2 years of being in the family I have only known them to eat at 3 resturants, one for breakfasts, and they alternate on Sat nights between the other 2. They aren't much for trying new stuff.
For my Papa I have made him baskets of his favorite snack size candy bars and treats. He has a major sweet tooth so it never last long.
Basket gifts always go over well
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
things like, a movie night basket, a popcorn bowl would be your basket, add microwave popcorn, a few gift cards for blockbuster or other movie place
Coffee basket
mugs, coffee, a few plastic spoons dipped in chocolate(for stirring)
I used to have a whole list of "basket" ideas they are on the web somewhere.
One thing I gave my FIL one year was a coffee mug with a picture of my kids, he loved it.

don't hit me - i know its only march but if you wanna do this - ya gotta buy them soon cause i doubt you'll find the materials later.
anywayyyyyyyyy.
dd and i are making this wayyyyyy too cool beach bag/pillow thing that was in her magazine and it soooooo easy, costs under $5 and she loves it!!
you take three brightly colored hand towels (that's what i think would be hard to find in other seasons). one you fold in half, stitch and make into a pillow. (stitch around edge, stuff with fluff, finish off)
then the other two towels you fold in half and make into pockets by sewing just the sides.
the pockets get handstitched onto the edge of the pillow (so they drape down the sides and it all looks like a big handbag).
add a strap, any decorations you'd like, maybe some velcro to keep the pockets closed and voila!!
you could even get some cheap dollar store beach stuff to put in it if you buy them in the next few months.
we're in the midst of making it but i doubt it'll take more than an hour total.

never use it! lol!)
Combine the cake mix and dry pudding in a large bowl, mix together. Put 1/2 cup mix into 8 plastic sandwich bags/secure with a twistie/label 'cake mix'.
Combine the powdered sugar and hot chocolate mix.
Place 1/3 cup mix in 8 plastic sandwich bags/secure with a twistie/label 'glaze'.
