View Full Version : Anyone know about FAE/FAS?

I have suspected for a long time that is at least partly what is wrong with 13 y.o. DD (for those of you who may not know, she is actually my stepdaugher, so I am not the one who was drinking during pregnancy!) I think K has the lower-end of the spectrum of fetal alcohol disorders, FAE, since her symptoms are less dramatic than FAS and fit the descriptions I have read of these children.

I don't *know* that her mother drank, DH says it's impossible that she would have. But she has multiple learning, behavioral, and social issues and no one has ever really diagnosed her to our satisfaction or really knows quite what to do for her.

She doesn't fit very well into any of the programs at school...her IQ is low, much too low for regular classes, not low enough for a self-contained classroom, but with all the help she gets from her resource teachers, she can still just barely scrape by. She is lost most of the time

Just wondered if any of you ladies know any kids who are KNOWN to have FAE who wouldn't mind discussing it with me. I need all the help I can get with this girl. The stress in our house over this is just about unbearable.

TIA.

I don't have any experience with this, but this post hurt my heart for all of you.....praying and hoping that someone here will be able to help.

My husband and I have adopted three little girls who each have FAE/FAS issues. We have worked tirelessly teaching and reteaching many things to these beautiful girls. It can be an amazing thing when God uses you to help these babies to wholeness. Our daughters have come a long way in the six years that they have been in our family. I know that there are times when our whole house was in an uproar as a result of one of their two to four hour DAILY tantrums for over two and a half years. It can be exhausting living in utter chaos for so long. I wanted to "quit" many times, but my heart just would not let me give up on them.
Today, these three girls are doing awesome! We have smiling, joyous, compassionate little girls. I am so proud that we stuck it out with them. God knows what He is doing by having these children in our lives. I know that your step-daughter may be a thorn-in-your-side, but maybe you are just what she needs.
Blessings,
Kim

but there are so many thing that can cause problems. If you want to look into other possibilities (for your husband's sake) Sensory Processing disorder, Auditory processing disorder, Nonverbal learning disability, PDD-NOS

This is just a bunch of common dx. in case you want to look into them. I have a friend whose 2 adopted dd's have FAS. I know it is a struggle. Her oldest is going into 8th grade and after being homeschooled for 2 years she is going to try public school again. It takes so much time and effort for this girl to learn anything. Even just obeying a simple request that she take a shower is an ordeal. She wants to obey but she forgets what her mother said the moment she is finished speaking.

I am sorry I can't really help, but I can sympathize.
