Ok, last day of school is today. I have talked to my family and my girls and I are going to begin de-cluttering the a.m.'s so that we can play in the afternoons. So...
Where do I begin? I have files upon files; I have started and re-started many times with this and I just can't get the hang of it. Obviously my filing system is not working. :D
Can you please share your file systems? What has worked for you (outside of burning your piles) and what has NOT worked for you. I really do need help ladies, because my mass producing piles are still reproducting.

I've never sat down and planned out our filing system, but this is what we've ended up with somehow. Despite the absence of any forethought, it seems to be working!
Utility bills
Van (monthly payments, financing paperwork)
Mortgage (monthly payments, financing paperwork)
Credit cards (statements)
Bank (statements, savings account book)
Medical (a separate file for each family member that includes the bill for monthly health insurance premium, summary of coverage, and paperwork from any medical visit)
Automobile (auto insurance bills for both vehicles, summary of coverage)
Home Insurance (bills, summary of coverage)
Life Insurance (summary of coverage)
Receipts (receipts for big items...this file also ends up being the "catch-all" for when I can't find a permanent place for something)
Investments
Income Tax
Real Estate (paperwork from buying/selling a home)
Manuals (instruction booklets that came with appliances or other household equipment)

I didn't say that I have long term files in my filing cabinet for
bank info
credit card info....all those nifty little things that come in a statement
household items (like coffee pots, A/Cs, small appliance type things)
insurance papers
can't think of any others right now...
I HATE paper clutter. anything that I can print from online is GONE at the end of each month when I can see that payment!

So what do you throw away? Anything that will come again next month? You keep things that are on credit, investments, insurance...

yep...toss anything that comes monthly once I can see that the monthly payment has cleared.
I keep investment, insurance and credit stuff for one year...then I shred like a crazy woman!
