I just can't figure out how many lights they stuff thru each lid.

what they did was buy the smallest string of lights they could find.

Count the number of lights and divide that number by the number of jars. This should tell you how many lights for each jar.

If you come out with an uneven number of lights, put extras in the middle jars.
