1 stick butter

1 pkg. chocolate chips
1 can nuts, optional
2 c. peanut butter (16 oz. Jar)
1 to 1 * pkgs. powdered sugar
1 box Golden Grahams cereal
Combine butter, chocolate chips and peanut butter in pan and melt. Combine cereal,
nuts and raisins. Pour liquid over cereal mixture and mix well. (Make sure everything
is coated well.) Place into paper bag or large zip lock and add powder sugar. Shake
like crazy until everything is well coated!
Comment by Char in OK:
This is similar to what my dh calls puppy chow!
We don't do the raisins or the nuts, and we use Chex cereal instead. I love puppy
chow and my dd's get a kick out of eating "dog food".

1 (3 oz) pkg jello
1 pkg unsweetened koolaid
1 c sugar
2 c boiling water
2 c cold water
Combine dry ingredients in large bowl or pitcher (something with a pour spout works best) and then add the boiling water. Stir till dissolved. Then add the cold water. Mix well. Pour into popsicle molds or dixie cups. (I use a 9x13 pan and line up my dixie cups before hand.) Then put them in the freezer for 1 - 2 hours. Check to see if they are slushy and then add sticks. Return to freezer for several hours until firm.
This is a great treat and can be made with any flavor or combo of flavors. It's fun to experiment. Some of our favorite combos are:
strawberry jello + lemonade
grape jello + lemonade
peach jello + orange koolaid

This is one of those things that you've probably got everything you need in your pantry. And if not, it's inexpensive enough to take anywhere. Don't worry about breaking the pieces into squares...just snap the stuff in pieces so you can manage it while eating.
35 saltine crackers
1 cup butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
5 (4-ounce) milk chocolate bars, broken into pieces - (I use a 12 oz bag of semi sweet chips)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Line a 15 by 10 by 1-inch jelly roll pan with tin foil. Lightly spray foil with a non-stick cooking spray.
Place saltine crackers, salty side up, in prepared pan. In a saucepan, boil butter and sugar for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in almond extract. Pour mixture over crackers and bake for 4 to 6 minutes. Remove from oven, top with candy bars, and spread evenly as chocolate begins to melt. Cool slightly and transfer onto waxed paper. Allow to cool completely.
Don't blame me when you find yourself hiding with a glass of milk and the container of this stuff half empty.

After School Snacks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My favorite after school snack is chocolate pudding with cool whip and crushed oreo on top but dk's and I will gain 20 pounds if I keep that up. Any other suggestions out there?
Thanks,

Re: After School Snacks

Raw fruits & veggies can't be beat for healthful snacks. If you have time & inclination you can cut the foods to make a funny face or other pictures on their plates. I've even seen books on this! There's a wide selection of dip recipes available to give variety. Peanut butter makes a great "dip" for apple slices & bananas.
You might just switch to sugar-free jello. Jigglers, parfaits, mini-molds, etc. make the snack fun. I'm sure Jell-O has a website full of ideas.

Low fat pudding, fat free cool whip, lose the oreo's, use graham crackers or another substitue instead.
How about bagel faces? 1/2 a bagel, low fat cream cheese use fresh veggies to make a face on it. The kids would have fun making new faces every day. I keep a tupperware container of fresh veggies in my fridge for snacks everyday.
My kids think that those flavored rice cakes (the small ones) are chips! they come in nacho cheese flavor and sour cream & onion now. Pretty good too.
How about low fat cream cheese with a small slice of ham rolled up in a tortilla. Then cut the tortilla into slices. We call these snails. (Best eaten chilled - the cream cheese holds them together better)
That's all I have for now. (can you tell I like cream cheese?)

Easy Snack
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My daughter and I make these all the time for all kinds of occasions. You can use the Hershey's Kisses, Hershey's Hugs, or even Rolos! We use the different "Holiday M&M's" to go with the particular season as well. Paulette
one bag of square waffle pretzels
two bags of hershey kisses
one bag of m&m PEANUT BUTTER candies
directions:
turn oven onto warm (approximately 170 degrees or so).
line a cookie sheet with the pretzels. (I used a cookie sheet with sides so I would not have slippage).
unwrap a hershey kiss and place it in the center of each pretzel and continue doing that till every pretzel has a hershey kiss sitting on top of it.
place cookie sheet in oven. Check them every few minutes until the hershey kiss gets glossy. This takes about 5 minutes. In the meantime put the m&m's in a bowl.
When the hershey is sufficently melted (it will still look like a kiss, but will be shiny) take the cookie sheet out of the oven. Take one m&m and place it on top of the kiss and give it a little squish. This pushes the chocolate into the pretzel and adheres all three pieces together. I used all the colorful m&m's and ate the brown ones.
Do this till each pretzel/kiss is topped with a m&m. I placed the whole cookie sheet in the freezer but, fridge will do, till they are all chilled again.

I don't know about you but when my boys get...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
home they are HUNGRY!!
Sometimes a mini meal - like a pizza slice or a sandwich is good too. Or Spaghettio's or whatever they like to eat for lunch. Sometimes I get them a happy meal (I know it's not healthy) after school on AWANAS nights when I know they'll have a snack over there.
Just rotate your selection.

I have a tweeny and a teen
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They are ravenous when they get home from school!!! I usually make a big pot of popcorn [we do not use the microwaveable, YUCK--to salty and buttery] and fruit slices. I have yogurt, cottage cheese, and crackers too on hand.
Sometimes too they enjoy a bowl of cereal.

Yakky's Granola Bars
Cream together:
1 c. peanut butter
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c corn syrup
1/3 c butter
2 tsp. vanilla
Add:
1/2 cup coconut
3/4 c raisins
3/4 c chocoate chips
3 c oatmeal (if you use the quick oats add 1-2 tsp more pb)
Bake at 350 for 20 min.
these are a softer bar - not hard crunchy ones like store ones can be. You could also add nuts, or sunflower seeds... but i keep it pretty basic. Kids love them!
StillJulie here...
I think Yakky said she uses a 9x13 pan, lets them cool, and then cuts into squares. Good at room temp or frozen.

This is a no-cook recipe that makes a couple of gallons and keeps well in the freezer. Excellent to have on hand at holiday time.
Place:
1 can peanuts
1 can mixed nuts
1 bag chili cheese fritos
1 large box Crispix
1 box cheddar wedges or Cheezits
1 bag pretzels
1 box triscuits
into a double bagged large grocery bag. Shake to mix.
Combine:
1½ cup veg oil
1 pkg ranch mix
4 t cajun seasoning
4 t dill weed
pour over mixed goodies. Shake well until the the goodies are coated well with the seasoning.
Store in airtight containers.
Before serving, add some m&m's or some raisins.
Also, you can substitute whatever you want in the way of crackers, cereal, chips, etc.
(Cheetos are really yummy in there, but put whatever you have on hand or whatever you like.)

~Have a snack sitting at the kitchen table for the kids when they come home from school. This way they won’t be grouchy from being hungry. This will also prevent them from digging though the kitchen cabinets looking for something themselves and messing up your neat, well-organized pantry. It is also the perfect time for you to sit and visit with them about their day at school.
~To discourage bad snack habits, don’t buy unhealthy snacks or keep them in the house.
~Present your snacks with a plate, place mat, napkin and maybe a flower from the garden; this way your snacks always look inviting.
~Have jars sitting on the counter with sunflower seeds, raisins, granola, prunes or peanuts for the children. If they see healthy snacks they’re more likely to want them.

strawberry jello + lemonade
grape jello + lemonade
peach jello + orange koolaid
We like lemon lime koolaid with lemon lime jello.
We mixed 1 box of lemon and 1 box of lime jello together and then weight out 3 oz. We then had enough jello to make 2 recipes of these. We loved them. My girls ate them in 3 days. (20 popsickles)

I've been looking for something yummy to make for a snack! The kids like these OK, I think for them I will try some cheese straws or something.
Whole Wheat Crackers
1 cup wheat flour
1 tbsp wheat bran
1 tsp corn meal
1 Tbsp dried minced rosemary
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp honey
2 tbsp butter, chilled
1/4 cup water, plus 1-2 tbsp, if needed
Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, cumin and paprika before baking
Combine all ingredients except water in a food processor and process until well combined. Add water and continue to process until mixture startes to come together into a dough.
Between two sheets of parchment or wax paper, roll out the dough into a rectangle of about 1/4 inch thickness. Refrigerate the dough for about 1/2 hour.
Preheat the oven to 375F.
Remove dough from refrigerator and roll out to approximately 1/8 inch or less. Sprinkle dough with salt and/or toppings of your choice. Use a pizza cutter to slice into 1 inch squares, discarding excess dough. Score each cracker with a fork or several pricks of a toothpick. Transfer crackers to a parchment lined baking sheet and space out slightly.
Bake at 375 for 18-20 minutes, until edges are brown.
Cool completely and store in an airtight container.

This a a spin off of Racheal Ray's 5 min fudge. You can add whatever you wish, even change up the flavor of chips (aka white chocolate, etc) or add fruit, nuts, candy, etc. They are really a versitile "cook-cook".
1 pkg chocolate chips
1/2 pkg butterschotch chips
1 can condensed milk
mini pretzels
mini baking M&M's
Put chips and condensed milk into a pan. Heat on stove till melted (3-5 min) stir so it doesn't stick to the bottom
Add crushed pretzels (as many as your heart desires)
Drop a spoonfull on to a parchment lined baking sheet. Add 1 mini pretzel to each. Place m&m's for the eyes. Place in fridge till firm. Eat w/ lots of water and a smile as they are totally rich!
Enjoy!

Hamemade Protein bars
Here goes the recipie..
3 C Oatmeal
1/4 C Choc chips
1/4 C dreid cranberries
1/3 C Raisins
1 C flour (usually whole wheat, but reg works)
1 tsp baking powder
2/3 C Peanut butter
1/4 C melted butter
1 C Brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Mix all together. Press into a pan and bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
I always triple the recipie and will put in whatever fruit (or trail mix I have at home). I usually food process the choc chips and dried fruit so the flavor goes all the way thru and you don't get chunks. I also put in nuts sometimes and I sometimes add a little applesauce or leave ot some of the oatmeal or flour if it is too dry!

1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Mix well in mixer or food processor until you have a soft dough. Using a cookie press make three-inch strips. I used a small star disc and it makes ribbons. Place one inch apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for between 10 and 15 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet carefully and cool before storage. This recipe makes around five dozen or more.
