Oh my goodness! Amy, you are more gifted than I! I would not be able to write a pattern like that. I can follow one fairly well....but write one....ummm, no. LOL
BTW, ETA, that is a pretty blanket. Did someone you know make it?

Amy - I love you! Thank you!
My friend from high school lives in South Africa now and runs a cottage industry there where locals make these afghans that she designs. I want to try and make a similar one - I haven't talked to her in a while so I am embarrassed to be like "Hi, long time no see, can I have your pattern?" LOL.

You are welcome. The second one I just googled so I have no idea who the person is who made it.
This is the one that we just finished as a group for my friend's wedding present:

I need someone to come over and show me in person how to do anything that isn't a straight line, single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet. I think that's about the extent of what I can do/follow.
I've tried to do circles, but can't get them to come out right.

That afghan was 20 people working independently on squares and then me attaching them all together. Nobody knew what the others were doing except that it had to be 12"X12" and in fall/neutral colors. The girl we gave it to cried! She was so blessed that we cared enough to do this for her! I think we all had a tear in our eye.
You can't see it good here but all the squares that look blank actually have patterns in them like dogs (she loves dogs), praying hands, paw prints, and things like that. It turned out really cool. It was both crochet and knitted squares.
