It's been nearly 20 years since we visited Montreal. We took a bus tour of the city. We saw the Notre Dame Basilica, which is a replica of Notre Dame in France. The architecture is stunningly beautiful. There are several chapels inside the basilica, as well. We saw the Botanical Garden in Montreal, and there was another major building that we saw, as well. Again, it's been 20 years so I don't remember everything. What I do remember very clearly is that all the signs were in French. Many people speak English but you can't count on people being able to speak English, or wanting to speak in English to you even if they could. I doubt that it's changed much.
Be sure to take a French-English dictionary with you. It wouldn't hurt to learn some French before you go.

Just went through there 2 summers ago. It's a beautiful city, but I was driving through rush hour traffic for hours (and I had to pee!). Be sure to bring and english/french dictionary and know some basics in French. I found they were very nice if you tried to speak french and didn't have any rudeness at all (contrary to what we were told before we went - I have family that lives there who aren't french and they make a big deal NOT to speak french and then complain that everyone is rude :dunno: ).
Do a bus tour for sure. I didn't get a chance to really check out the city as we were headed for northern quebec! I would really like to go back and see Quebec City sometime. It was really cool with all the old style shops and things. Have fun!!! I'm trying to convince my dh that we need to take another trip north someday! :)

I took a year of French in high school, and I was able to ask people for help in French. They weren't always so accomodating, especially when the question was, "Parlez vous anglais?"
However, the bus driver on the tour was very sweet, and so was the waitress at the restaurant where we ate dinner. We ate at a casual French restaurant, which was yummy. I wish I could remember the name of it, but again, it was 20 years ago.
