I'm absolutely livid right now, and I don't know who else to ask so I thought I'd throw this out there.
A good friend of mine has a son who is currently receiving ECI services. I don't want to go into too many details so forgive my vagueness. They are having a problem with ECI in that they recently brought in an "expert" to evaluate him who stated that she felt that the child's disability was not as severe as mom suspects and that mom just does too much for him. After doing some research, mom finds out that this "expert" has a reputation for being hired by school districts to do evals on children and amending her reports to that which the school district lawyer wants put in.
The child has had a private evaluation by a doctor and is receiving some services through their medical insurance for the disability that this "expert" claims he does not have. She did not use any evaluation tools or do a parent interview. She observed the child for an hour and declared that he does not have the disability.
Does anyone know how much weight ECI reports have when you go through the transition process to the school district? Will his future teachers get a copy of this report? I know the district will do their own evaluations, but mom does not want this report to sway them as far as which evaluations they do.
Is there any way to get this opinion taken out of his ECI record? I know with school districts, you can get an independent evaluation and have it considered before determining diagnosis. But I have no idea how ECI works b/c when we were with ECI, they never attempted to do a diagnosis.
Any advice?
And if you could, please pray that this boy would get an appropriate evaluation and appropriate services when he moves to the school district next fall.
Thanks!
